TOM HOPKINS...American

Tom is the founder and President of Asia-Pacific Productions. He is the principal producer, photographer and editor. He has over 30 years experience in commercial broadcast television both in film and videotape. Beginning as a news cameraman in Portland, Oregon, his work has taken him to Italy, Germany and many parts of Asia for the ABC, CBS and NBC Television Networks as well as local stations in the U.S. and Japan. Among other awards, Tom received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for Best Documentary Production for "To Begin Again" about a devastating Italian Earthquake.  He is based in Portland, OR.


MIYUKI SHIGEJI...Japanese

Miyuki is co-owner of Asia-PacificProductions and serves as  producer/director. She is responsible for Japanese script-writing, research, logistics, translation and coordination. She has hosted bilingual television programs in Japan and served as assistant director in Tokyo for the AMLA Show from Los Angeles. She has worked for many years as a professional translator and interpreter. She has extensive experience in facilitating productions in Japan, where social customs and the lack of language can present some formidable obstacles. Based in Portland.


GARY TEGLER...American

Gary is our principal producer/reporter for news and documentaries, and serves as scriptwriter/narrator for commercial productions. Gary has extensive experience as a broadcast journalist. He had worked 10 years in radio prior to settling in Japan in 1982. Since then he has worked as a newscaster for CNN, CNBC, NHK and other broadcast and cable news services. In addition to his work at APP, he is a contributing writer for the English language newspaper The Japan Times. Gary's voice and scripts have been used in over 500 video productions.  Based in Kyoto.

AARON BERMAN...American

Aaron is our videographer for projects in Japan and Asia.  He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York were he studied film and video photography, computer animation and editing.  He did a stint with CNN's Washington Bureau before taveling to Burma to make an award winning documentary called "Paper and Gold."   He worked in Boston and New York in both production and post before coming to Japan in 1995. Since joining Asia-Pacific Aaron  has collaborated with a variety of Japanese filmmakers on features and commercial projects as well as international clients including The History Channel, CNN News, ABC Sports, ESPN, WGBH Boston, ExxonMobil Corporation, UNDP, Kyocera and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.  Based in Kyoto.
 


In Memory of  MALIKI SMALE...Australian

In 1985 Maliki joined with Asia-Pacific Productions as camera assistant and sound man.  For the next 15 years he was privy to some of Asia’s most monumental events.  He was in the Phillippines when the “People power” movement swept Ferdinand Marcos from power.
He helped document the people and culture of Korea during the 1988 Summer Olympic games and assisted with principal photography on two motion pictures, “Black Rain” in 1988 and “Mr. Baseball” in 1991.  In 1995, he was front and center during the devastating earthquake that struck Kobe, working day and night for Asia Pacific and ABC News.
 


Maliki passed away on March 31, 2005 at the age of 64.  He will be missed.
